Duo is a compact bar tool for Joseph Joseph. A corkscrew, a bottle-cap opener and a foil cutter, resolved into a single body small enough to leave on the counter.

What we were asked.

Bring three separate bar functions together in one product, without the size, the arms or the drawer-only look of a conventional corkscrew.

What we answered.

The problem was not the number of tools. It was that every one of them needs leverage, and leverage is what makes a corkscrew big. Take the leverage out of the user's arms and put it in the grip on the bottle, and the whole object gets smaller.

A winding corkscrew with four foil cutters built into the base of the arms and a cap lifter in the handle. Closed, it sits over the neck of the bottle and cuts the foil. Wound down, it works as a standard wing corkscrew. Three tools, no additional components, no separate parts to store.

The arm geometry had to satisfy two jobs at once. Closed, the base of the arms needed to form a circular aperture that sat true on a bottle neck and held four cutting wheels at the correct angle. Open, the same arms had to run the rack and pinion cleanly through the full lift. The screw carries a non-stick coating so it enters the cork without force, which keeps the load on the arms low enough for the section to stay slim.

Cuts the foil, draws the cork and lifts caps, in the order you actually need them, without putting anything down. Replaces three tools in a drawer with one.
